A beautiful antique Norwegian glass fishing float bearing the scarce HN mark attributed to Namsos Glassworks.
This is the first HN example I have owned, despite having handled 11 of the 14 Namsos mark variants represented in my reference book. In my experience, HN is a strong candidate for the rarest Namsos mark, although the total number of surviving examples is unknown.
The HN mark is illustrated as reference no. 144 in Olaf Raabe’s book.
This particular float combines a remarkably clear, bold impression with beautiful blue-aqua glass. In transmitted light, the colour becomes especially vivid, revealing cloudy, smoke-like wisps and flowing patterns within the glass. Small bubbles and natural irregularities add to its individual character.
The fitted rope net frames the seal beautifully, leaving the HN mark clearly visible. The net is included; its age relative to the float is unknown.
Please see the measurement photograph for size. Colour varies with lighting, and the photographs show the float under different lighting conditions.
You will receive the exact float pictured.
Carefully packed using the box-in-box method for international shipping. Shipping is charged separately.
NordicMaritime — antique fishing floats from Norway.
Namsos Glassworks operated for only around 12 years, from 1855 to 1867, according to Olaf Raabe’s reference book. This HN-marked float is a beautiful survivor from that brief chapter of Norwegian glassmaking history.
