$447.00

EXCEPTIONALLY SCARCE DARK AMBER B.V. — BIRI GLASSWORKS, NORWAY
A remarkable antique Norwegian glass fishing float from Biri Glassworks, bearing the distinctive B.V. (B dot V) mark at the pontil.
This example displays an exceptionally dark brown-amber appearance, almost black under ordinary lighting, transforming into a rich glowing amber when illuminated from behind. Complete with aged rope netting and a substantial carrying loop, it is an outstanding piece of Norwegian maritime glass history.
HISTORICAL DOCUMENTATION
Biri Glassworks was established in 1761. Experiments with glass fishing floats were conducted at Biri as early as 1842–1843. The documented production period for round B.V.-marked fishing floats is approximately 1857–1875.
A Norwegian newspaper reference in Aftenposten, dated November 4, 1871, specifically records a glass fishing float marked B.V. Further supporting evidence includes B.V.-marked glass seal fragments discovered at the glassworks site and unused B.V.-marked fishing floats found at a nearby farm.
Historical research describes B.V. floats in sizes of approximately 3–5 inches, predominantly in green glass. Brown-amber examples are specifically noted as considerably harder to find.
