Up for sale or buy-it-now is a genuine antique Japanese glass fishing net float. This piece was personally recovered from the coastal regions near Bristol Bay, Alaska. These floats were a staple of the North Pacific fishing industry for decades before the transition to modern synthetics.
Key Features:
• Hand-Crafted: This float features a distinct, heavy pontil mark (seal) where the glass was detached from the blowpipe, confirming its authentic hand-blown origin.
• Material: Heavy, thick-walled glass with a natural pale greenish tint—the result of the recycled glass sources used in Japanese production during the early 20th century.
• Visual Interest: The glass contains "seed bubbles" and cooling swirls, giving it a beautiful character when displayed in natural light.
• Condition: Excellent vintage condition. The glass is clear and bright. There are minor surface scuffs and "flea bites" consistent with a life spent in the Bering Sea, but no major cracks or structural damage.
Dimensions:
• Diameter: Approximately 4.5 inches.
• Please see photos for scale comparison with a standard U.S. in Alaska near Bristol Bay. These floats traveled thousands of miles across the Pacific via the Kuroshio Current, eventually washing ashore in the Pacific Northwest and Alaska. A perfect addition for collectors of maritime artifacts, nautical decor, or Alaskan history.
