Aboriginal Bark Painting: Sea Turtles and Fish
Yirrkala, North East Arnhem Land, 1971

size 32cm .x 63cm

Collected in Yirrkala in 1971, this bark painting depicts a group of fish and sea turtles. It is painted with natural earth pigments on bark. Bands of fine rarrk (crosshatching) fill the background and may evoke elements of the water, sand aquatic vegetaion in the landscape, although their specific meaning cannot be established without information from the artist.

The bark is in exceptional condition for its age, with straight and no loose pigment noted. The animals may have cultural or ancestral significance, but an association with the artist’s totems should not be assumed without an attribution or accompanying documentation.

Please view the photos carefully as they make up an important part of the description
