This is a wonderful and historicAntique Old 19th c. San Francisco Folk Art Nautical Seascape Oil Painting on canvas, depicting the USS Alert (AS-4) American naval ship, being pulled into San Fransico harbor by a steam powered tugboat. The shore, and several small hills are visible in the distance, while a red buoy floats about in the finely painted and effervescent cerulean ocean waters. A large, masted ship is visible at the right edge of the scene, with the words: "ALERT San Francisco" painted on its hull. The USS Alert was launched in 1874, and for several periods, both in the late 1880's and in the mid - late 1890's, served in the Pacific Station, and was often docked in San Francsico, California. This piece likely dates from the 1880's - 1890's and was likely painted en plein air by an eyewitness to the events. Signed: "L. Tolhurst" in the lower left corner. I could not find any information on this artist, but perhaps you know more about them or their work? Approximately 18 x 23 3/4 inches. Good condition for well over a century of age, with a few small pinhole tears, some light dimpling to the canvas, light scuffing and moderate edge wear (please see photos.) Acquired from an old collection in Los Angeles County, California. This wonderful representation of early San Francisco history is Priced to Sell.
