View Full Version : Waterproof/tough digi camera

Hi all,

My old Sony has finally packed in so am looking for a compact, waterproof ( I fancy a go at some underwater shots), tough camera to take a record of my fishing trips. I scramble around a bit in the water and occassionally bump a tree...

Any recommendations?

i can't recommend anything in particular but you should be able to find anything along those lines at good prices at places like b&h camera or adorama.

Pentax Optio. Any waterproof model.

I have the original one. It's been around the world with me. Literally. Awesome little camera.

What Gus says.

I have one, the latest you can get for about $170 eBay.

Worth every penny.

I like my Olympus 1050sw, but I have a long way to go with my camera skills.

Olympus 725sw for me....waterproof down to 5m, shock proof from a 1.5m drop.
7MP & small/slim enough to fit a your shirt/ pants pocket.
Goes everwhere with me.
Whatever you choose grab a gorrilla grip tripod to go...lightweight & versatile.

shamelessly borrowed from the internet....

Try the new Pentax W90---this is quite a bundle of a camera---12.1 megapixels---waterproof, drop proof, micro and "microscope" (micro/micro) shooting with built in LED lighting for the "microscope"shooting. At ~ $330 from Amazon---it's a winner. Gave my Canon 1200SD to my grandaughter to buy the Pentax---WOW!!! :o "Doc"

I have the Olympus Mu, 850 SW, and it does what it says on the label ! Water and shock proof!

I recently picked up an Olympus Stylus(?) 6000 Tough.
Waterproof, shock proof, 10Mp, Stablizers, face recognition, Good zoom, macro and super macro, more settings and menus than I will ever need to figure out and the easy point & shoot settings too. Small enough for the shirt pocket but not too fidgity for big fingers. $280.00 locally.
Just getting started with it, but very happy so far.

I realize this is an oldish thread but its the sort of info that always need updating.

Fujufilm just released their Finepix XP20 model as a followup to their wildly successful Finepix XP10. IMO the XP20 is probably the best value in a compact waterproof-shockproof-dustproof camera for anglers on a budget: 5x optical zoom (35mm equivalent of 28-140 mm), pocket-sized, decent battery life (about 200 shots), watertight to 5 m (~16 ft) and shockproof to 1.4 m (~ 5 ft), and it appears to have even better physical construction than the XP10. In Canada, Walmart bundles it with a floating strap for $200 CDN. See http://www.fujifilm.com/products/digital_cameras/xp/finepix_xp20/

For anglers on a mac-and-cheese budget a new option for a waterproof camera might be Kodak's brand new Easyshare Sport C123. It is feature-limited compared to the XP20 (e.g., 5x digital zoom only, no macro setting) but it is waterproof (3 m) and dustproof, and it costs a measly $80 CDN or USD.
