Vintage Tribal wood carving from Papua New Guinea. Bilum or food hook:

A practical and ceremonial wood carving from Papua New Guinea. This would be hung from the rafters to protect against evil spirits.
Food and other items would be hung from it in baskets or woven bags (Bilums, see separate listing) This would put them out of reach of vermin etc..
Decorated with cowry shells and the feathers of guinea fowl. Length: 30 inches (not including feathers)
Width: 7 inchesA friend of mine lived in Papua New Guinea in the 80s. He sent me this, and a number of other items (see other listings.)
