Authentic net floats from the waning days of the Casco Bay Maine herring and sardine fishery, which was defunct by the 1970s. The family these came from fished the waters around Chebeague Island for decades in the first half of the 20th century. The floats were attached to the edges of large nets, stowed in wooden dories and towed to the fishing grounds where the nets would be “set”. The thousands of pounds of fish they caught would then be offloaded to one of many sardine carriers, larger ships which, once filled, would travel to shorefront canneries to be processed. Your chance to own a piece of authentic Maine maritime history. Size varies but approximately 2” high and 3.5” in diameter. Black and orange floats are hard plastic. White float is dense foam.
