This is a vintage Art Deco architectural slate bottom and glass fish tank aquarium or terrarium.
Unfortunately, one side of the glass is cracked. I just couldn\'t resist those fish feet.
Considering its Art Deco style, I would date it circa 1930s or possibly 1940s.
The tank part measures 14 1/4 inches long by 8 1/2 inches wide (36.2 cm x 21.6 cm). It is 10 3/8 inches tall (26.4 cm). The overall height including the fish is 11 1/4 inches (28.6 cm). The base measures 15 inches long by 9 1/4 inches wide (38.1 cm x 23.5 cm).
There is writing on the bottom which is difficult to read, but is basically a one-year warranty. I can also make out AQUARIUM, SOUTH AMBOY, NJ, which is probably where it was made.
The feet are each made of two brass fish, each of which has extensive green tarnishing on it.
The slate is in very good condition, with no cracks. There\'s a dark line going through it on the top and the bottom, but this is not a break. However, I\'m not quite sure how it got there.
There is wear, scuffs, discoloration, rust and oxidation to the metal, but that\'s what gives it it\'s great old look. It\'s still a solid, sturdy piece.
It\'s missing a lot of the filler that would go where the glass sides meet inside. It most likely needs to be resealed.
The glass is original and has a lot of scratches and scuff marks on it, along with what looks to be a water line along the lower part of the glass.
Like I said, I just couldn\'t resist those fish feet!
It weighs just under 11 lbs. 11 oz. (5.3 kg).
