Ken Gardiner MERLIN Yacht Sail Boat Sailboat Hull Model Wall Mount:
$299.00
This is an original 1977 Merlin wood half-hull model by the legendary model builder Ken Gardiner.
The teak wood mounting is 38 inches by 9.5 inches, so not small. I does have a few scuffs, and small spots where the paint is missing, but I’d imagine any good model builder could square that up for not very much $. They are visible in the pictures.
It is signed by Ken Gardiner, who passed in 2013. He’s legendary for these hulls, and this one is early - 1977. The signature is pressed into the wood, but it looks like the ink has faded. See pic. There is also a sticker from his early shop.
Merlin was designed by Bill Lee. Merlin is considered to an Ultra Light Displacement (ULDB). The racing yacht has won numerous offshore yacht races including the Transpac (Transpacific Yacht Race) in 1977 establishing a course record that stood for 20 years.[1] She is a 68 foot long by 12 foot wide monohull weighing in at 25,000 pounds. Merlin is currently owned and raced by William F. \"Chip\" Merlin, founder of Merlin Law Group, for his team Merlin Yacht Racing.
Bill Lee is well-known in the yacht racing circuit as one of its most integral figureheads. Dubbed “The Wizard,” Lee first achieved recognition in the 1970s with his boats Chutzpah and Merlin, both of which having won the Transpacific Yacht Race from Los Angeles to Honolulu on multiple occasions. Merlin’s record-setting Transpacific Yacht Race voyage was completed in 8 days, 11 hours, and 1 minute. The record stood from 1977-1997.
