I've seen many pieces like this, but this one is unique with its emphasis on the beard and mouth—a rare expression indeed. This fish ornament is called a 'kaipan.' It's a wooden ritual instrument specific to temples of the Ōbaku Zen sect, used to signal the time. It was introduced to Japan by the Zen master Ingen during his travels. Over time, it evolved into what is commonly known as a 14cm

It appears to have something like cracks on the side, but it is not completely split. It is made of hardwood, and since this is meant to be struck, many such items have lines like this. Please refer to images such as Image11 for the side views.
