On the western side of Arnhem Land is Gunbalanya (Oenpelli).
Gunbalanya is a large Aboriginal town situated about 60km north east of Jabiru,across the East Alligator River in Arnhem Land.
The area around Gunbalanya is known as Stone Country, a nameinspired by the spectacular Arnhem Land escarpment and rock formations thatemerge from the floodplains surrounding the town.
This is an incredible, very simply carved full fish, painted andincised using natural pigments and decorated in a cross-hatched design.
Visually exciting, you would swear that it is woven, even onclose inspection.
This is art executed in the traditional style of West Arnhem Land, which is part of the oldest continuous tradition of painting(from rock art to bark) known in the world.
