You are offerding on a very rare ice spearing decoy from Maine. As i stated in the other listing, these are very uncommon compared to the great lakes area ones which were far more prevalent. Both this one and the other were found in the same camp which was built at the turn of the century. The native Americans taught the settlers about ice spearing and this decoy is definitely for that use. See underneath where lead has been fitted into the carved fish for weighing it down for jigging. When i first obtained these, i had no idea exactly what they were as Maine has a history of famous wood carvers but i noticed the holes in the top of the fins and the depression and weight in the underside. After going to a couple of sales, i had them appraised and they were very rare and genuine from the time period stated. I have seen these sell for four figures with provenance but since all i have is my story, i have listed this for a very low reasonable starting price. If they don\'t sell, I am probably better off. They look beautiful hanging from the mantle or any place in my home. The paint and carving and tin fins are a work of art on their own and this one is a trout also. The tail fin is bent a little but, i don\'t clean antiques no do i fiddle with them as i like to leave them as found. It is not in any way damaged and can be bent back. Will be shipped priority in a neat wooden box of my choice well protected. Don\'t miss out on this one! All of my listings are fair and i want people to be happy and thrilled with the things i sell or i don\'t sell them. I could see how easily an item like this could be lost while fishing or damaged if that salmon or lake trout was able to chomp on it before being speared. \"On a cold hoary night, the wind howling and smoke rising from the lake as devilish figures dance around the jagged hole in the ice waiting with spears ready\" This decoy is also in the folk art antique carved fish category as well. It is in amazing condition and it\'s possible it was not used in the icy water of Rangeley lake. It is however made to be a spearing decoy and was found with other period items as well.
