Nice vintage oil on board primitive painting of four street cats looking for trouble.
They are lounging on the sidewalk by a door stoop in front of a fish market hopingfor a scrap of food. Their expressions are delightful. A whimsical feature of this paintingis that ifyou hold it at just the right angle, there is a fifth cat that has been over-paintedwiththe trash can. The "fresh fish today" sign a lot of interest and some bright colors.
The painting is painted on an old board, not artist board, a piece of old packing boxwood probably salvaged from the trash.
The painting is in "as found" condition, there are a few minor scrapes in the area of thethe cat laying by the trash can. A talented person could easily do a little in-painting.
The painting is signed G. Alexandra, I have no idea who that is but I'm glad they likedto paint.
I believe this was painted in the mid 1930's based on the board and the patina of the painting.
The size is about 16" x 9 1/2" , the board is about 1/4" thick.
A very nice piece of Americana with folk art appeal.
