This is a civil war era brass or bronze heavy lock, with a 10\" heavy iron chain attached. I bought it 70 years ago at a roadside antique store in Tennessee. A great collector\'s piece; a great paperweight in an office. It works well, although it could use a little lubrication.
When the key is removed, the cover closes over the keyhole to protect the mechanism from weather.
