This is a charming and vibrantAntique Old French Countryside Landscape Folk Art Oil Painting on canvas, depicting a quaint rural countryside landscape in France. This artwork shows rolling green hills, lush green farmlands, a small Catholic church, and cows peacefully grazing in the distance. In the foreground a lone fisherman, a small cobblestone bridge and calm stream, and a small barn, with several people in front of it are visible. The sky above is tactfully rendered with delicate hues of pink and pale blue, indicating a sunrise scene. Signed and dated in the lower right corner: \"E. Vialard 1924\" in the lower right corner. Additionally, an old label affixed to the verso of the canvas reads: \"Personnes de la Campagne. Matin de Mai. Ernest Vialard.\" There is very little information about this painter, aside from a mention in the January 1913 edition of the San Francisco Examiner, and an inclusion in the 1940 Census, which indicates that he was born in France in 1884 and lived in San Francisco at the time of the survey. Perhaps you know more about this artist or his work? Approximately 15 x 18 7/8 inches (including frame.) Actual artwork is approximately 12 x 16 inches. Good condition for a century of age, with some mild - moderate age-related craquelure throughout the painted surface, and mild scuffing and edge wear to the gorgeous original gilded wood piecrust frame.
