Reel Escape

For a number of years High Sierra Fly Casters of Gardnerville Nevada has supported 2 national fly fishing programs for cancer patients. The first is Casting for Recovery, a program for women with breast cancer. We provide “river buddies” to be with the women while they are on the stream for half a day of fly fishing, and provide financial support to the organization.

The second program is Reel Recovery, a program for men with all forms of cancer. We support 2 programs a year, one here in our local area and one in Northern California. We spend two days on the water with the men as well as providing financial support to the organization.

Two years ago we decided to expand our participation by starting two, 1 day programs for women with any form of cancer and for kids with cancer.

The kids program, Reel Escape for Kids, provides a day of fly fishing on a private preserve for children with cancer and their families. Trained medical personnel are on site to cover emergencies. Breakfast and lunch are provided as well as rods, reels, flies, etc..

The womens' program, Reel Escape for Women, is similar to the kids program. This last Sunday we had 6 novice fly fishers at the preserve in Pleasant Valley. The stream has both resident wild fish and augmented fish; it’s all catch and release, flies only. All of the participants caught fish, some over 4 pounds.

Nice to see some good things brought to light (instead of all of the bad that one sees & reads in the news daily).

Great idea for those suffering from the many forms of cancer,
its good to know there are still selfless people out there, who do care.
Broad smiles on the sufferers faces, tells me that it helps, on so many levels.
