San Diego Bonefish?
I just read that there are bonefish in San Diego and Mission Bays.
Now I need to immerse myself in knowledge about catching them. Therefore, any tips would be much appreciated. Being as how I can't fish my preferred waters, small streams with wild trout, I guess the next best thing might be elusive wild bonefish.

Good luck with a fly rod, they are out in 40feet of water. You can get them with a dunking setup and some squid strips. Mems.

they are very occasionally caught with fly gear, but fishing the bays is primarily for the bass species that make the bay home.
Why can't you fish stream trout? (other than the weather lately)

Re: San Diego Bonefish?
mems, I read where some do cruise the eelgrass in the southbay. I also watched a guy on youtube catching them in a kayak pretty deep. I guess mostly I just want to learn the salt water fishing. It's something I've never done.
Ray, it's a long way to drive to decent streams from Point Loma. I plan on spending some time this summer exploring the streams (very small ) in San Diego Co. I've read about some small wild 'bows in Doanes creek and others around there. Hard to get to and fish, but that's kinda my thing.

I saw a video of a guy fishing from a kayak with a fly rod. It still wouldn't be sight casting. I went out to La Jolla kelp bed and had a blast with yellowtail and barracuda. Tons of bait and the seals are pretty cool. I would do that if I went back to San Diego or go out with Conway and get some makos. Good luck let me know if you get any. Mems.

Re: San Diego Bonefish?
you ever do any back bay fishing in Mission or SD? I want to figure out how to get in to fish either by wading or from shore. Days off are random for me right now so i can't plan to far ahead for a trip.

I think the bays are fished by some from shore, others by float tube/kayak/skiff.
The Fli Flicker board is very popular with guys who fish the salt in SoCal. Richard Cullip fishes there quote a bit, and usually fished from a tube and does very well on bass.

I know there are CorBina & CorVina there as well. Bones woudl be tough to pick up in deeper water but they are inshore as well - somewhat elusive but there. Lots of people confuse the bones with CorBina but they are there... :D
