disc golf
We have been tearing it up.
There are a lot of courses out here.
I throw sidearm off the tee and in the fairway, backhand approach and putt. I like the candy innova discs and I carry a small quiver (a couple of distance drivers, a fairway driver, a sidewinder, an approach and putt) in a sling bag that I wear when I throw, it does not interfere. I really like learning how to control the flight to use to course advantage.
I hate water, have lost a couple of discs now, I'm going to get one of those cord retrievers.
It's inexpensive, fun, a great way to spend a couple of hours and is kid friendly.
I've seen some guys who were really serious and have fashioned a golf pull cart for all their stuff, dozens of discs, a seat all that.
Light and fast, just like my fishing is what I prefer.

Re: disc golf
Definitely!
I would be in the "not stoned hippie" category.
This is something I will set up at our farm one day, a few holes around the pasture. We have a couple of courses at ski areas that I can't wait to play next year, super long downhill.

Re: disc golf
We played a LOT in Oregon. Love it, although haven't played much since the move. I've a about fifteen or so discs that I carry in an old cordura messenger bag. Oddly, we have a super long course just a couple miles from the house, and Austin is full of them... We have 28 courses within 25 miles... Methinks I need to pick up my discs again...
This is the one by the house: http://www.dgcoursereview.com/course.php?id=541&mode=ci

Re: disc golf
Link? no worries, man. I like the size of the messenger. Can keep a pen or two, sunscreen and a sigg in it, too. I used to print up the course maps before we went to new ones, and keep them in the flap of the messenger bag.
Forgot to tell you - totally off topic, but over thanksgiving I started playing Pokemon (again) with my 8yr old... and my 18 year old joined in as well... LOL. I like it more than MTG, it's just as deep, and less freaky and dark... fun stuff. Games with the kids, inside and out!

Re: disc golf
I can throw the disc pretty well but haven't played a track yet. Looks like a blast and I can still be fat...

Chef, it is one of those deals for sure, I'm gettin fat too!
The discs are specialized, heavier with a flying saucer cross section. The outside edge shape is different for the flight path, how it carves, terminates, glides, some of them are specially made to roll like a plate on edge!
You could play with a regular 175g frizz but it would take you a while and you would have to chuck it pretty hard all the time. With a disc golf disc, we are talking technique. A young svelt woman can huck it just as hard as a stoned out muscle head.
There is a specialized shop in Scottsdale, "Spinners on the Green" on the SE corner of Miller and McDowell. There is a course just at the greenbelt, 100 yards away, 18 holes.
You can do it with one fairway driver but three discs are a better bet, 4 or 5 seems about right for someone getting along with a few different shots. Make sure to carry at least one extra disc in case you don't want to swim for one...

Re: disc golf
Chef, you can borrow from me or the kids to see what kind of discs you like before you buy. At fifteen a whack, it can get expensive...
Let's go.
