    Closed season stream reconnaisance

The Victoria, Australia trout stream season ended a few weeks ago so any trout fishing I do until September will be in lakes and reservoirs. In that time I'll have a look at any creeks and streams that I come across and map out a few new streams that I can try when the season reopens. There is one small stream that has had a couple of mass brook trout escapes over the last few years that I definitely would like to fish. Brook trout aren't very common in OZ, unlike browns and rainbows. When word got out about these escapees, the little stream was like Burke Street in rush hour and it got absolutely thrashed. Not alot of catch and release there. I didn't get a chance to fish there. I'll try to post a link to a site where someone did very well.

    Cheers,
    Steve.

Brookies in our vast land are vary rare indeed, especially self sustaining populations in streams....but they are out there.

Slightly out of focus shot because of my chattering teeth & shaking body's reaction to a
icy blast of bad weather that just rolled in...
A secret headwater in NSW a couple of seasons ago.

P.S. Currently researching an off track walk called the High Sierra Route, California, USA, at the moment,
which has lakes & streams filled with Golden trout & Brook trout at certain points along it's length,
so side trips chasing those will definitely be on the cards.

Victoria's trout opening is fast approaching.... enjoy your new stream sessions out there in the bush, Spod.

Trying to find Brook trout in Australia should be similar to finding Kangaroos in the USA.

A nice looking brook trout. Come September, I hope there are a few remaining brook trout escapees in the Rubicon River. No use keeping it secret--just about every man and his dog knows about this spot. What did you catch your brookie on?
    Cheers,
    Steve.

If my memory serves me well it was a Sz14 baby woolly bugger....I usually start with a wet black & peacock but the
water was slightly coloured on this occasion.

I'm thinking of sending away for some classic brook trout flies like the Parmachene Belle, McGinty and Mickey Finn. It would be a hoot to catch a brookie on one of these flies, along with one of my old fibreglass fly rods and Southbend auto reel. Sort of a trifecta--classic brook trout fly, vintage reel and a brook trout. I might have to take along the cane creel too!

    Cheers,
    Steve.
