For me, it's the stimulation of my senses....fooling a wild stream jewel is just the icing on the cake.

Sight.......watching a trout lazily drifting in & out of the current, glimpses of fiery red parrots flitting through the canopy,
a slithering tail disappearing into the undergrowth, heavenly shooting stars.....

Hearing....myriad of bird calls during the day, strange mammalian cries in the inky darkness..

Taste.... a tipple of warming port, beside an flickering camp fire after a long day session, blue vein cheese, smoked trout,
freshly baked camp bread & melted butter......

Smell......a dark damp earthy rainforest, smoke on the wind warning of a bushfire close by, decaying roadkill....

Touch.....windblown snowflakes melting on my warm cheeks, hands cupping cool clear stream water.....

I truly appreciate each response on this thread. It is clear that the folks on this list spend a lot of time reflecting on their fishing. Ofuros--you've painted an enticing sensory image.

    Why we fish

Ya'll are too esoteric for me. I get outta the house, avoid the honey do list. Look for a big hawaiian bonefish and watch my line melt into my backing. If I have a beer and a monte cristo then I am even more stoked. Mems.

I fish for trout because they don't live in ugly places and a day on the stream quiets my mind and heals my soul. As I get to fish more the number of fish and even the number of casts become less central to the process than the sound and feel of the flowing water and the subtle unconscious process of letting my cares and worries slip into that current and be carried away from me .....downstream.....if for just a little while.
