    Re: Autumn, dry fly, grayling

Over here in the UK the Grayling is very highly regarded by river fly anglers. I am fortunate that I live in a part of the UK that has a strong population of Grayling in many of the local streams. In fact I have just this last weekend had my first trip of the year and on a new river for me to. I have posted a report on my blog which is linked below , apologies for not putting directly on here but appear to be having issues with posting photos at the moment.

There is also an interesting link on there to an article by Hans Van Klinken about the Yorkshire rivers and its Grayling population.

    Wetted my whistle there ,
Sunday brings my first grayling day of this winter ,will be joined by my very good friends from the Monnow fisheries association on the 4 mile stretch of chalk stream near Hungerford in Berkshire .
Being early in the winter midday day should see some rising fish ,so dry may be the way too go ,if not it will be classic sawyer pt nymphs and small bugs ,for the clear slowish fairly shallow waters !

    Thanks for sharing nic,
What beautiful waters you have there, lucky enough to be
graced with the presence of the 'ladies of the stream'.
Nice pics, love the touch of crimson red on their tails.

    Ofuros.
    Out & about....looking for trout.

    Nic,
Nic with luck next visit next weekend will be dry again .
it is a very attractive system of carriers and a wee bit of the main river Kennet, sadly not a patch on how I found it first some 30 years ago .
It is located in the heavily populated south of England ,river flow has shrunk in those years , the lack of flow has meant huge build up of silt which has reduced the fly life bar the big danica mayfly ,this compounded with red claw crayfish (not native ) eating the eggs of fly and even the spawn from trout and grayling , and the fishing pressure has increased .
However it is within range for a days fishing and the days I hold there for up to 10 people are always fun .

Awesome post,I have only caught one Grayling in my life.It was on the Big Hole river in Montana and was about 9 inches long.I caught Brown trout to 20 inches in the Lewis river and Cut/rainbow hybrids to 22 inches in the Lamar river but to me the little Grayling was the fish of the trip.

I live minutes from the Great Smoky Mountains and fish the tiny creeks for small Brook trout that have been here since the Ice Age.You have to walk in a few miles and sometimes fight the brush but you see no wet boot prints on the rocks ahead of you.
