Re: Some wee dries
I like the idea of the CDC "parachute" style hackle on those dries scotfly. Can I ask how you did it? Was it just a case of winding the CDC feather round the hackle post then trimming the excess or do you have another trick up your sleeve? It just seems that if you did it the way I've mentioned on such small hooks there would be a lot of waste material, although I suppose you could then use that as a sort of dubbing material so as not to waste it completely.
Cheers

Garry, it's very easy to do, not so easy to describe. I'll be doing a sbs soon as I can, I'll put it up here for you to see.

Still loving that #32. Too little space for all that tying

Re: Some wee dries
Nice tying. I have one question you gents may be able to help me with. When tying in stripped herl do any of you have the herl break easily. I'm trying to use as little tension as possible. Perhaps the herl I have is just old and a tad brittle. Thank you.

Re: Some wee dries
wet the herl. either lick yer fingers and swipe it or soak in a water-filled bowl. you can also apply a bit of hair conditioner. same approach as with biot or quill bodies.

Re: Some wee dries
Brookie, you need to moisten the herl first. Soak it in a tumbler of water for a few minutes, or wrap it in a damp cloth if you prefer.
Another thing, and you've mentioned it is thread tension. When I tie a herl body in I always make the first two wraps a firm, but not full tension, subsequent wraps are full tension.

Re: Some wee dries
Very nice 32. The problem I find with the 518's is the shank is to damned short !!! Wish They would make a #32 midge hook with a longer shank for we who like to split the atom of fly tying !!!!

Lovely flies Scotfly, I'm used to seeing your flies on other boards, am I right in saying the wee stuff is a new thing?
