Small river

Visited this private stretch yesterday,I'm thinking of getting a ticket for it for the coming year.It does'nt look like much but its
only a few miles away so will be handy for a few hours after work.

This is the start of the beat at the weir.

I guess its only maybe half a mile or so in length and more canal like than river.


All the same I can imagine having some fun with dries here on a summers evening.Water clarity is reasonable for this area.
You'll just have to picture it with the leaves out....... ;)

More like an undercurrent if you ask me,judging by the water going over the weir it would appear to be a gentle drift.

As for fish,theres browns,chub,perch,roach,pike and according to a guy from the club that has the rights,"a rainbow of around
10lbs was caught last year".
I'm not so sure about the latter,but like I said,close to home,not a lot of pressure,got to make the most of what you can get
without costing an arm and a leg.

I live in one of the very few places in the US where public access is VERY limited and leases are the norm. I hate it because it's a very foreign (literally) concept to us here. You have plenty of good factors - close, not too expensive, variety of game, not a lot of pressure... I say go for it!

Looks like it could be fun. At least you've got some free bank side to be able to cast a fly! The chub, perch, pike and trout should be able to be caught on streamers. I find roach really hard to catch on fly. Small nymphs/spiders are supposed to be the best flies to use. I find chub waaaay spookier than trout when fly fishing. If it's close and reasonably cheap, then going for a couple of hours after work is worthwhile. It's always fun discovering new waters.

Yeh I think I will,the crazy thing is that the rest of the river,especialy down stream of the weir is amazing,all the features you could wish for.I'll have to ask around for permission.
I've got a few more rivers with free access to visit before the start of the brown season so I'll keep you posted.

It would be pretty cool to see a pig of a brown rising in there. That would get your heart racing! Here piggy piggy!
