    Micro Nymphs

Have been tying a few of these up this week. A few, more like about 5 dozen.
I fish small nymphs a lot and using a leader with a strike indicator built into it. I find these much more effective as I believe most of what trout eat is pretty small. I went back to my notes that I took some years ago when I was knocking fish on the head to eat but to also see what they were eating (I don't kill fish anymore). Here is some of the data. A bit dated and generalised but it does show that food can be very small.

So here is what I use:

    1. Iron Blue

    Hook: Partridge IN Size 20
    Bead: Black Tungsten
Weight: 3 turns of fine lead wire right behind the bead
    Tail: Microfibbets - splayed
Body: Two parts. Rear is Hends Body Quill No BQ08 (Crimson) Front is Hends Body Quill No BQ15 (Grey)
    Wing Bud: CDC tied short
    Thorax: Natural Mole

    2. Little Olive (Pale Watery)

    Hook: Partridge IN Size 20
    Bead: Black Tungsten
Weight: 3 turns of fine lead wire right behind the bead
    Tail: Microfibbets - splayed
Body: Two parts. Rear is Hends Body Quill No BQ93 (Yellow) Front is Hends Body Quill No BQ20 (Light OLive)
    Wing Bud: CDC tied short
    Thorax: Hare Poll

    3. Olive

    Hook: Partridge IN Size 18
    Bead: Black Tungsten
Weight: 4 turns of fine lead wire right behind the bead
    Tail: Microfibbets - splayed
Body: Hends Body Quill BQ39 (Mid Olive)
Collar: 2 turns of CDC placed in thread
    Wing Bud: Crystal Flash (Yellow)
    Thorax: Hares Ear

    Hope you enjoy

Those look terrific. They are the kind of flies that could be tied in many sizes and still catch fish. You've inspired me to try them. Just when I think I've found the perfect fly combos, someone always seems to create something new that grabs my interest. Thanks.

Beautiful nymphs. The combination of the scruffy thorax and slender body on the number 3 is simply perfect.

I like these alot and can see the Olive and Little Olive/Pale Watery working in my waters. As said before, I think these will work well in slighty larger sizes also.

My hat's off to you. A bead and lead wire added to a #20 hook. Great ties.

This is a product from Czech Republic - Hends products - a fantastic product. Comes in a range of colours that allows you to blend- as in the Iron Blue. I get mine from Pat Cullen at www.irishflyfishing.com who has given me fantastic service.

wjg, yep they would work in larger sizes and I will do a couple tomorrow for you. I am finding that I am going smaller all the time, Driven by the fishes food chasing and not by my entomology leaning. As I said in my blog.

    Thanks for the comments guys.

    Re: Micro Nymphs

I'd second the quality of service from www.irishflyfishing.com
Put in an order with them during the holidays and got an e-mail on new years day as they were out of stock on a couple of shades of Body Quills and wondered would I like a refund, replacement or go on back order. Anyone who spends any part of new years day trying to help their customers deserves praise in my book.

    Cool nymphs. :bigthumb:
