I wonder how many fish that size have busted mandible.
Did you fix that before you put him back?
I take it from the blood line on his jaw that you have yet to receive the blessing of fishing barbless.

Normally it is bad form to quote oneself but

I just got a PM from an upset Dave, who had been, in fact fishing barbless
and who did not in fact inflict this damage,
small fish eat every fly they see so it was in fact have been inflicted by a previous angler.
There is a blood mark on the jaw, yet no apparent bleeding from that fish.

I responded in the first place in anger, being the brat that I am.

Dave, rather than respond to your mail, this far better aired here,
as my direct and public apology to you.

I could and indeed should have given you some benefit of doubt rather than the benefit of cold sarcasm, in the light of which I calculate that my response in the thread is out of place.

I stand corrected and wish you all the best for your fishing and conservation for the future

That damage is caused by barbed hooks, some folks catch a wee thing like that and shake it off the hook, that is the usual way, I guess.
The other is using a big hook with a big barb and ripping out that hook then slinging the fish back in without care.

Barbless, no way that can happen.
