When are you targeting your first drop?

    Depends.

Below the rim, in April or sooner, just an overnighter.

In the Whites, May or later.

I will spend the night on the highest point in Arizona probably August or Sept of this year. I am very much looking forward to that...

But this is a fishing thing for me, get out, way out, beat the drum, fish, come home and plan to do it again.

I know you want to go solo but if you want another let me know and I'll get on the eliptical and leave the serrated at home.. ;)

    A few links in here:

Serrations are one of those things that knife people debate ad nauseum. Plain edges are easier to maintain, and if kept proper, are all most of us need. Serrations cut tough things faster, and can be more dull than a dull plain edge and still be useful. They're not bad to sharpen if you have the right stone (my Sharpmaker does just fine...)

I have knives all plain, some all serrated, and some combo edges. I usually don't grab the knife based on the edge, though. They're all sharp, and will cut whatever I need them to.

If I were looking for a backpack knife, I would seriously look at a bushcraft scandi knife, and get my fiskars saw out of my mountain biking camelbak. I have a Mora in the pack as well... The Fiskars saw and Mora might be a perfect combination... oh, and they have the saws at Target... for like $12...

Chef, when I am making plan, you are invited. I won't announce a solo trip, I'll just do it.

Start getting your gear ready and we will go in the summer up in the Whites.

gstrand, I keep a fiskars telescopic saw in my pack as well. Great saw, cuts like there is no tomorrow and super light as well.
