    Rainy Day Fly Tying

I tied up a few of my favorite small stream flies today.

    Materials
    Hook, Mustad #9671
    Tail, woodchuck
    Body, Aust possum
    Wing, calftail
    Hackle, Grizzly, Brown
    Thread, hot orange

Tie in woodchuck guardhairs for tail

Wind back to just behind hookeye and tie in calftail wing

Trim calftail butts and wind back to tail tie in.
Tie in brown then grizzly hackle

Next dub on some Aust possum, approx 2 inches, then wind back to just in front of wing

Wind grizzly hackle to the front of wing and tie off and clip, then do the same with the brown hackle.

Whip finish and the fly is complete.

And after all that tying there was a roast chicken dinner with the fixins.

Nice tutorial BRK TRT. I really could have used that a few months ago. :)

Every small stream angler should have some bombers in their arsenal. One of the best patterns I have ever fished for sure. I see you have a whole box of them in the background. Try different colors too.

Thanks for the pics. I like the foam block you have on your bench for the hooks. Thats a good idea that I am going to steal.

That is a great pattern and thank you for posting the tutorial, I was hoping you would after seeing the great brookies you take on it. Thanks.

I just realized what hook your using. Isn't the #9671 a 3X long, 2X heavy wire hook? Why do you use that instead of a standard dry fly hook? Just curious and always trying to learn more. Thanks.

    terry,

The hook is actually a nymph hook.

Its just alight as the Mustad 94840 but is a bit longer and makes it much more apealing to the trout. I have used both and the longer fly is better.

Also the other reason is in a conversation with Fran, he sugested it.

    Try some on the 9671

Thanks, I will give it a try. The 9671 is getting harder to find so I will use the signature series R73.
