I have more and more become very much involved with my 9mm pistol of late (an S&W M&P). Anyone else here pistol people? Anyone pack on stream? I'm thinking my Concealed carry license is something I need...

My little friend:

Since that pic was made, I've swapped the mag release to lefty and changed the backstrap out to the large version. Last night I changed the white front sight dot to neon orange. Tomorrow night I'll run ~150 rounds through her at the local range.

How about when I add my most often carried knife?

FWIW, I love going to the range. I grew up with lots of guns, but only recently have gotten back in to them.

Sweet can on that pistol, Gerard!

I wanted to be a Glock man, but they just aren't comfortable for me, and up until the Gen4, I didn't like the righty mag release. I may still get one sometime though... that scattergun is dead sexy!

Speaking of gen4, I love the new fine frame texture (called RTF2) of the new gen4 models and had mine replaced by Glock in Austria last year – unfortunately they only do this at the factory. I didn’t like the grip pattern of the gen 4 slide, so kept mine stock.

Below is a gen 4 pic for reference.
http://www.tropicalfirearms.com/images/glock_22_RTF.jpg

At the same time I added an oval mag release which I like much better than the stock one which was pretty crappy.

Very cool. I'm not too sure about the slide either... but from a fishy perspective they look like gill slits...

I waited and waited for the Gen4's, but the grip angle (while improved) still throws me off.

Pack on stream? I don't do that at all, although I just got myself a Hatson air riffle to get rid of some birds that are feeding a little bit too much on the juvenile fish in one of the becks around here.

Why would anyone pack heat while fishing if I may ask?

I have a rifle and a shotgun for hunting. I do not have a handgun, and I don't know why someone would carry one while fishing.

I live in the Upper Midwest. We do not have poisonous snakes here. Is that a reason for carrying a gun?

I grew up a hundred miles north of my current home. As kids we fished and camped overnight in the woods, and we would meet a bear (they are all black bears here) every once in a while, and on rare occasions a moose. I never felt threatened. The bears and moose gave us another story to tell when we got home.

At our last place we had bears in the yard and on our deck every spring and summer, and they were in the woods where I fished. A few times I inadvertently got too close, within 50 feet or so, of a bear and her cubs. Each time both the bear and I were happy to retreat without harming the other.

We also had timber wolves in the neighborhood, but to even see a wolf or two was an occasion, and they never threatened fishermen. The wolves sometimes killed hunting dogs.

We moved last summer to a new place, and here we have fewer wolves, but we have many coyotes. I've seen them cross the pasture late in the day. Still, I don''t expect they'd be a threat to a fisherman. The farmer across the road has a bear that dens up for the winter a couple hundred yards from the barn. It's a nice bear, and he wants to keep her, because if she left, a not so nice one might take over the territory.

It would be a shame to kill a wild animal with a handgun if you didn't have to do it. My friends and I have been in the woods many thousands of days among us over the last fifty years, with never a need for a gun.

The most dangerous creatures in our woods are certain ticks and mosquitoes that carry some nasty diseases. I'm not sure I could shoot a tick off my waders without tearing the fabric.

You’ll forget about the zombie apocalypse? I figure that’s the only time I’ll need to start shooting. Except for hunting and all I hunt anymore is opening day dove and quail. Now that I’m older I may start carrying full time everywhere I go. Biggest threats to me have been while traveling and wheeling out in the desert. I never had to shoot in defense but I've ran a few times. I’ve always relied on my athletics to get me out of a jam. I can’t do that anymore.

Time goes on and things change. I bought a ruger p345 last fall for my daily driver. Takes about two seconds to palm and is concealed. I got it after the bill passed last year allowing a firearm in the vehicle on a univ campus. I have a buck next to the seat and it’s still there. I have a buck knife in all my vehicles.

This is the ruger with all the safety features that take some getting used to, especially the auto de-cock. I have two loaded mags and one empty mag used to disarm the dang thing. It has an oversize trigger guard I like. This gun shoots nice and seems to have the recoil of a 9mm compared to a full 1911. Packs a big bang though. It fits real nice in an uncle mikes.

I inherited my mother’s bedside pistol. She kept it in the bed side drawer. I had the matching .38 j frame I shot for almost forty years. The .32 has never been shot except at the factory and is mint. I grew up with shooting and guns and lately I have been looking for a pocket gun. I like the ruger simply because they’re made in arizona. The lcp, lc9 are looking pretty good.

Oh, yeah, I did forget about the zombie apocalypse.

The original question was whether anyone carried a handgun while on the stream. None of the places I fish are likely to be the scene of a gun battle between me and criminals.

I support responsible gun ownership and use. Not everyone is responsible enough. Every so often we have another tragic story in Wisconsin or Minnesota of a child killing a friend or himself while handling a bedside firearm. Most of the guns used by gang members in our nearest metro area are stolen from legal owners.

I like the Walther P22.

I am deadly accurate with a Army issue 45.

I really like the Glock 9mm, the sub compact that I have shot felt like it was going to "jump" from my hand as I was shooting it. I will have to spend a little more time with it.

I also like Sig Saur, the 9mm is cool, like a spy agent hand gun.

One day, I will own a hand gun, I don't feel it is necessary, especially in the outdoors where it is safe. In the city??? Different story.

I enjoy shooting machine guns, I have shot so many when I was in the army, so many different kinds. They all have different personalities. The M-16 is so user friendly, it seems like a toy. The AK-47 even seems Russian, the UZI seems Jewish... The 50 cal I shot many times was like, "if you can see it, you can hit it" from so far away. I really like shooting full auto with every five rounds a tracer, that's how they used to do it at the ranges in the service. The tracer allows you to see the arc and where it is getting to.

...and then you walk up on what you have shot with a 50, whoa, it kills a car, easy.

Guns are cool, one must be as responsible as one can be, and then some.

I like the little 22's as well, but the "real pistol" ones like the P22 have bad reps for being picky eaters and only liking CCI mini mags. My brother in law has an old Ruger MK I that eats anything and is a hoot to plink with. Of course he also has a tacticool Mini14 and Mac10... among others... You can take the boy out of the Marines...

On the .22 front, I picked up a Ruger MkIII 22/45 - basically one of the most reliable .22 pistols ever made with a 1911-ish interface. The best of both worlds. It's not small, but if I were to pack for self defense, I wouldn't pick a .22 - my 9mm would be strapped to my bod.

With the 2245 at the range tonight and the stock open sights, 10 yards = 2" groups pretty easily, with about a second between shots, not a lot of time. Punched 40 rounds through a 3" area.

At 25 yards (heck I can't even SEE that far), I hit the red on the official pistol targets ~25/30 times... it really is a little tack driver. The guys in the next lane were blasting with a couple of .357 revolvers, and I think we both wished we could use the other's pistols... They loved the thing. I can see a long term relationship beginning.... :)

Used to never walk the stream or enter the field without my S&W Model 29. Now i always carry bear spray. Used it personally at least 5 times on griz, black, and brown bears. Seen it used on a polar bear. Works every time and no animal to skin. In another career i used it on people. Worked every time. However since i'm a certified gun nut . . . when wilderness tripping . . . i still carry an 44 mag American 2 shot derringer ( @3"' barrels) . . . just because. Round ball plink grouse with it. Never a bear . . . yet. Favorite handgun is a S&W model 34 (32 cal) 4" kit gun. PS i am no longer a card carrying NRA member.

LOL... My 9mm performance was "just ok" last night. It seems that in every mag (I load 15) I lose two or three off the red at 10-15 yards. At 25 yds with the 9, I'm happy with all shots in the rings.

I just drug the target out of the trash... lol. This was 40 rounds from the 22 at 25 yards. Heck, I can barely see that far!

On that second one, for 25 yards out with stock sights on a 22 pistol I'm happy with it, but it does appear by the general rise above center that I'm either aiming high or anticipating a bit much/breaking my wrist up a bit.

Pictures indeed.

I'm going to an indoor range this weekend, I'll nab a few shots there.

I'm having fun researching the weapons of my interest. I've shot more long guns than most. When I was an infantry medic, we were familiarized with the worlds militarized small arms. Every range had to have a medic and it was either burn up the ammo or count it and turn it back in.

These were the days of full auto.

Pull the trigger once and empty the magazine in 3 seconds. Watch out where you lay the weapon down, that barrel is smokin hot.

I've ran several hundred .223 rounds in the last month, a couple hundred 9mm. I found a place that sells 50ct box for 9$ so I buy it up and store it for target practice.

Not sure what rifle I will end up with. I like a compact AR type (Colt or S&W) or maybe an UZI for the inexpensive 9mm don't know.

I do know the AR is a great plinker, across the valley I'm shooting and targeting accurately. That's a fact. I do like the Israeli Uzi for its heritage and fun factor, don't know.

I'm headed for a safe too, I'll probably get that first.

Truly a new interest phase for me, I'm feeding it.

...and keeping fly fishing satiated as well with my pursuit of tenkara and bamboo fly rods.

I'll be fishing a whole cane "Marutake" fly rod this year as well as a exposed mortise handle compact fly rod that I made for small streams. I'm working with my sponsor, "Sakura" on developing a new tenkara rod.

The outdoor pursuit is good.

Pictures soon.

It's spring, I'm waking up to it.

I've been hankering for a long gun and a small CC capable gun these days. Thinking something simple like a Ruger LCP - I like the Texan Special. On the long gun, not so sure. While I do like the AR platform, something about growing up "A-Team" keeps me in the Mini 14 camp. The newer models are significantly more accurate than the older ones, and I like the Garand-esque action reliability and simplicity. Who knows.

Fun stuff! I assume AZ laws are pretty friendly given the UZI opportunity?

Gus, the AR platform is MUCH easier to get to shoot accurately over the Mini 14 setup. Yes the Mini 14 has had accuracy improvements the past few years but they still can not compare. If you are looking for a reliable and fun setup that is about a 2moa setup than you can't beat the Mini 14.

One of my sons wants a 1911, I carried one as a medic, love it.

I recently ran a bunch of rounds side by side, Mini 14 and a S&W .223. The Mini had a scope on it and the AR type had open site. We were (all of us) all more accurate with the AR than the Mini. Those AR's are point and shoot, highly accurate. The Mini 14 is a nice long rifle but it is heavy in comparison.

The Mauser is cool, dig that.

AZ is pretty open about gun ownership. When Obama was in town once, there was a guy in the crowd that had a AR slung across his back. He was all in the news. It was amazing to see the law protected. Arizona has cojones in some regards.

I'll be visiting this thread more often.

Yes, class III: http://www.recguns.com/Sources/IIF1.html (what happened to the great interface for images, links and such?)

His youtube video was a link to a child shooting a automatic weapon. I figured if he was posting that, he better well know the laws regarding the legal ownership of that sort of weapon.

There are a fixed amount of fully automatic weapons (pull and hold the trigger, it continues to fire bullets) that are registered in the United States. You can apply for a license to the BATF to own and operated said weapon but you must buy one that has already been registered.

Fixed amount = outrageous prices on a machine gun.

It's a cool thing but in essence, a machine gun wastes ammunition for small arms fire...

We just got back from a Gun Show in Phoenix, my first one. Pretty cool that you can buy and sell like that but a good gun store will have all that available.

Anyway, I found what I was looking for. Something like that, I would research on my own but I was hoping to learn a little something maybe from him.

Take care and I got some pictures from the range this morning. We put 250 through the Glock 17...

If that is half as reliable and durable as the AK that is looks to be designed after then you would have a real winner there....nice rifle.

NICE G!

I'm back to moving slow on my choices.

I ended up with 6 magazines for the G-17, a good round number.

Awesome Addy, I just love mine. Is that an AR15 on the right?

Yes.

Brand new.

We feed it and it was hungry!

I just bought a Ruger 10/22 and will configure it with a Tapco stock and a red dot sight. 22LR is cheap feed along with Glockin it.

I was holding the P90S in my hands, the folding money ready but could not do it and backed off. The rounds are proprietary and expensive to keep feed.

In the interim, I'll shoot the AR, be amazed at the accuracy of the Glock, rapid plink (pepper) with the 25 rd clips and now I will be able to hear when I get home, I bought nice Pelitor muffs. Can't hear sh!t with them on.

In Arizona, guns are being bought at record levels. Gun stores always filled, line at cashier and the hunt for cheap ammo continues. I have at all times at least 500 of each calibre.

The 22 LR is fun, still gets the job done.

I like Gus's match shooters. Those will be mine in the future as well.

Love me some shootin.

Been eyeballin' another 10/22 myself... Had one years ago - totally one of the most fun plinkers out there... and they just came out with one that breaks down in to two pieces as well.

That .22 pistol I have is a Ruger 22/45. another plinkaholic that doesn't bust the bank.

Sweet Addy, those AR's are nice. Just wish they were more freely available over here.

I found my 10/22 for $199 at Sportsman Warehouse. The Tapco Interfuse stock was $89. I am still searching for a inexpensive green/red dot scope. The 10/22 has a limited range flat path. Don't need expensive optics so I researchingy options for a scope. The idea is to have a fun rifle that is cheap to feed and something I can teach the kids protocol with.

If they like it, and all is good, then I will take another step forward.

Scope (sight) mounted, it is finished. Going to the Sportsman's Warehouse to p/u another 25rd Ruger mag. You can't have too many magazines.

Now I gotta sight the thing in.

This little rifle fits the bill for now. It is a fun project and it cracks em off quickly. I'll be shootin cans soon.

Pictures coming.

Wow, the 10/22 is awesome! Red dot site zeroed for rapid fire. I picked up a Ruger LCP and a exta mag, some personal defense rounds (Hydra-Shock) and a inside the belt holster. In Arizona, you don't need a permit to conceal. Arizona is pretty cool like that. Next week I will vary my Glock while fishing, solo packing deep in the high mountains of Colorado...

lcp is on my pocket pistol list as all ruger's just because. Did you see the coyote special? I reckon you have to be a texan to appreciate that. http://users.dakotacom.net/~jeepster/tipshades.gif

I did see it. I'm not a fan of that sort of thing. The story behind it is cool. The LCP is a really cool pistol. Accurate, small, it fits in your hand (and in your pocket) really nicely. I bought a minimal inside the belt holster so it is not a problem.

I'll carry it on stream in Colorado when I am way back there.

Jeepster, lets get together and go fishing.

What, Black River? Anywhere you want.

Take care.

I can't tell you how many times I've almost picked up an LCP - the Coyote version is pretty popular here, no surprise...

I got mine for less than $300

It is a really accurate pistol for such a little thing.

At about 50 yards, I can a hit a dart board size target readily, that is just amazing in my book.

Goes in the front pocket of your pants no problem although I don't carry, but it is legal in Arizona without a permit.

I bought an additional magazine, one loaded up with personal defense rounds, the other empty. When I go to shoot, I transfer the Hydra Shocks to the other clip and shoot out of that to keep the spring springy.

It's just petite, inexpensive, reliable, made in my home state, accurate and kinda cool looking.

Have not regretted my decision and there are a few of them in our family.

My latest at ten yards.

Glock 17, 17rd clip.

Looks like I am a little left, what do I do about that?

Is it a trigger pull thing or just keep doing what I'm doing?
