Just returned from a quick week long trip to Tasmania,
seeing family members, bushwalking, with a little trout fishing thrown in.
Will return again after Christmas, when the weather warms, for a more fish oriented journey.
Hope you enjoy the pics.

The planning stage.

Baby wombat nestled safely between her mothers legs. Uh Oh... she knows I'm there.

Brookies only waters. Lk Plimsoll onthe left & Lk Selina on the right, a rugged, wind ravaged wilderness area.

Gingerbread Hut, Mt Rufus. Cute, little emergency shelter.

A favourite stream I can never seem to stay away from, fished her 2years ago & it hasn't changed a bit,
tea coloured with dark, dense rainforested banks, used to be a rainbows only water,
now infiltrated with browns. Some things change, some stay the same.

The 'Vale'.
Didn't catch a sausage, spooked maybe 9 fish hanging under the undercut banks…a little frustrating.
Then I misjudged my footing & went a fell arse over tit…tussock grass spearing straight up the nose,
...to make things worse, I must have dislodged my lunch from my day pack at the same time…..& lost that too.
Fishless, cold & hungry, I treated myself to a counter lunch at the nearest local.
Mmmm, porterhouse steak, pepper sauce & vegies + garlic bread rolls, next to roaring open fire.

Brk Trt, soupmix & baileydav, thanks fellas.

In reality, it probably takes a few days to wind down from work & really
start relaxing/ enjoying yourself. Then before you know it, your heading back
on that flight home !

Thanks for the kind words Satoshi & Nic.

The best time for fishing in Tasmania is usually after Christmas.
But I enjoy the crisp coolness in the air & the snow cover when I go walking or climbing in the mountains,
we don't get much in the way of consistant snow here in Australia, so I try to enjoy while its here.

Good old Van Diemens land, almost like a miniature New Zealand. Hopefully you get more fishign done in the new year..
You didn't happen to run into any Thylacines :D

Thanks Greyfox & Rossa,

No Thylacines(Tasmanian Tiger)......Rossa.
Just Wallabys, Pademelons, Possums, Wombats,
Tasmanian Devil, Bandicoots, Spotted Quoll(Tiger Cat) & Echidna......the usual
motley crew.
Plenty of Bull ants & jack jumpers too....but no snakes.....yet.

I am intrigued by this reel.

Do you like it?

What do you like about it?

Nice report on a far away place, dig your perspective...

Looking at your pictures again, the one adam has shown above could have been take near where I'm from in North West Ireland. Amazing how places can look so similar given they're on the other side of the planet.

adam,
Its a Loop Opti creek.......& the bottom line is its overpriced & spare spools are expensive.
But on the flip side I can't fault it, its a top quality product, with a fine drag, lightweight, well finished, and has that nice 'click'
to drag adjustment. Love it.

rossa,
I know what you mean....it reminds me of the windswept treeless heath, on Dartmoor in Devon, in the UK,
where I spent some of my teenage years.

Ofuros,

I'm so pleased you decided to share your adventure with us, the photos were fantastic; and I loved the bit - when you said you lost your packed lunch; and then supposedly went where? for your cooked meal, in that wilderness? Brilliant report!

Thank you

Glad you enjoyed the post Mostyn.

Even in the Tasmanian wilderness you're never far from a small town of some kind.
Most have pub or hotel where wholesome counter meals (lunch & dinner)
can be had & are usually pretty light on the hip pocket.

Tasmania is only a small Island after all.
315 km (189 miles) west to east and 286 km (175 miles) north to south,
Tasmania is comparable in size with the Scotland (UK),
West Virginia (USA) and Hokkaido (Japan).

Just in case anyones interested :) ......http://www.discovertasmania.com/au

that's a really cool report ofuros! i'd love to fish that water someday... i've got to ask though, what's the fishing culture like over there? is there the occasional fly shop in the small towns you speak of? did you see any other fisherman? thanks again for sharing, i've probably read it 3 or 4 times now and still love the look of that water.

jw_sartini,
You can fly from mainland Australia capitals to Hobart, Launceston and Devonport.
Theres also a car ferry from the mainland to Devonport, thats an overnight trip.

Stockup on local flies & anything else you need at these centres, as once you leave these areas
fly shops become scarce..... if you blink at the wrong time,
you'll have to look in the rear view mirror, to see the town that you just past through.

Even in the height of the trout season (post Christmas period), other fishers are rarely seen.
At lakes with easy road access, such as Great lake, Little Pine Lagoon,
Penstock Lagoon etc, you'll bump into some fellow anglers.

On overnight or longer walk-in trips to the Western Lakes area...
theres about 3000 lakes & small tarns to loose yourself in,
so you're spoilt for choice.
Polaroiding & stalking is the name of the game here.
Just a tip... the further upstream you go on these interconnected systems,
the larger the fish grow.

Streams & rivers are so numerous, that you'll rarely see another person.

You'll need the so called bible....Tasmanian Trout Waters by Greg French ISBN 186513034-6
Covers almost all Tasmanian waters in detail, running & still waters.
A new fully revised version will be published sometime after Christmas.

Online tasmanian fishing licence AU $66.50 for the season,
can be purchased here.Adult / single rod.
