View Full Version : Smallstreamin' with the boys, Texas style...

So... there are no "real" trout in Texas. There are some rubber fish in an artificially created tailwater a ways South of us for a few months of the year that you can pay to play with, but that's really it, so we have to make do with the warmwater species here...

The boys and I went out to a little unnamed creek near the house the other day. This is a creek we cross on our mountain bikes regularly, and I have often wondered what it held. This was my younger son's first true fly rod outing... and he's hooked. The first spot we walked to was an old abandoned railroad bridge that has a culvert that dumps just upstream and thus has created a pretty good hole. The boys each caught a few, including Rio Grande Perch (Texas Cichlid) - sort of our version of selective and more difficult fish to get on our little stream. "Rios," as we call them, are more sparsely populated and albeit more selective than the panfish we have, are not too bad when compared to some trout...

Anyway, after we left the culvert, we really started exploring, and it was of course, tons of fun. It was also good to get out with my older son who was my small stream buddy when we lived in Oregon but hasn't wanted to fish since moving here more than five years ago. He leaves for college in a few short months, and the time with my boys is always cherished... hopefully we'll get out to what my youngest now calls our "secret creek" again soon.

Great post!!
I really love the last picture :)
I wish I had a boy too... I'm envious.
I have two girls but they never have been interested in fishing, though I took them for fishing when they were kids

I understand your feeling.
This is a favorite image of mine. My wife took this picture, when we went on a picnic to the sea. My older girl is at the left, the younger one in the middle, and Me at the right, fishing together for some small fish. They liked fishing, but they were not hooked..... They are big girls now...
