I fished the Metolius one fall several years back. Beautiful water. I landed a few rainbows and a nice brown. The fish were tough to catch and the nights were cold in the tent. The bulls were off spawning higher up above Camp Sherman. Oregon has many fine waters.

A rare and wonderful thing in Louisiana, this one in the Kisatchie National Forest. It is my favorite place, though a 3 1/2 hour drive from where I live in the swamps and bayous along the central coast. I go three or four times a year, it's tough fishing, a fickle, temperamental creek, but a joy to be on at any time.

Looks awesome Ben! :D To be honest, I always used to think that chalkstreams were always a little over-rated, but since fishing a couple back in August last year, my way of thinking is now quite the opposite!

Stunning photos, and I bet they hold some beautiful fish :)

Those pics look just like my home waters of Black Earth Creek outside Madison, WI. Love that creek, more fish per mile than any other stream in the midwest. Incredibly fertile.

BTW, "chalkstream"? Is that what we call spring creeks here in the colonies?

Chalkstream
03-05-2010, 05:19 PM
Garethl, thanks - remember you from flyforums (I'm Bumps there - thought better of that tag on a US forum ;) :D ). I know what you mean about chalkstreams - think of the River Test and you might as well be fishing a stillwater in many cases. The River Meon (all the pics are of the Meon on 2 different beats) is however a different beast! You're right - lots of lovely fish but spooky as hell - very challenging. And you get some massive seatrout (for that river anyway - 18 inches) at spawning time  . Obviously I leave them alone but I often go down just to watch them on the redds - stunning. Seem to remember you posted some pics of some stunning brooks you fish?

Fly Chef, if I understand it right, you call a spring creek a small stream fed by a natural spring? Dunno about the strict definition in the US  but a chalkstream is sort of like that (most are fed by springs) but the key is that they run over a bedrock (if you can call it rock) of chalk. This means that the river level is mainly fed by groundwater; when the ground is saturated the rivers are higher, and they do not rise appreciably straight after rainfall as happens with freestone or spate rivers. Makes for relatively stable fishing conditions. We have no natural lakes or reservoirs here as all the water is naturally in the ground. Mid-size (for the UK) rivers like the Itchen and Test are chalkstreams by definition too, so the term doesn't only refer to small streams and brooks. Hope that helps - what is he correct definition of a spring creek in US terms - was I on the money?

BTW - San Diego - great place! Spent a couple of happy weeks there a few years back. Just the best climate.

Thanks for looking - loving this forum!

Ben

The streams posted here are all stunningly beautiful!!
It's also interesting that the streams in one area, for example, the streams in UK or the streams in Eastern USA have something in common among them. It seems as if I can tell where the stream is only if I look at the picture of it. (Of course there must be exceptions.)
This is probably a reason why people want to go different places and to fish streams of completely different character from their home water.

Sadly the beat owner has sold the fishing rights to a big estate who want to charge silly money for the trout fishing and not permit grayling fishing through the winter months .

Those winter trips have been such good times ,meeting with friends ,making new friends ,sharing my knowledge of the fishing getting people into their first ever river fish .
The lunchtime bbq where the woods were filled with laughter as fishy tales were told and steaks were consumed ,washed down with a variety of wines from el cheapo to some fine vintages .
Hope to find another place to repat this !

great looking spots in a variety of areas, are these hidden gems in the deep woods or overlooked areas in populated areas?

Most are pretty hidden with the exception of the NC & Tenn pics. Both popular streams.
Some are overlooked and in plain sight, like the NY stream.
Nothing I enjoy more than picking out a thin blue line on a map and exploring it to see what it holds.
Sometimes they don't pan out for various reasons but when they do, you are rewarded with beautiful treasure.
