We are getting a steady in flow of members, some of which are not fishers.

I have suggested to Gus to STOP ALL NEW MEMBERSHIPS.

I'm also going to suggest that we delete zero post memberships and or one or two post memberships. Cut back and enjoy a quality visit. We can grow but grow purely. Advertisements and hackers can be dealt with pretty easily.

I think we should have an application process.

You will have to write why you want membership.

How you fish and why.

Maybe even a photo.

I can't stand to know that there is someone with a membership here that can do us harm.

OK. Here's the new deal. We've had a few spammer ID's get through. Registration is currently shut down so I can get things sorted out. Up until now, registration was regulated and had to have been approved by an admin, usually me. That will change moving forward. It was a pain and hard to manage.

I have moved all current users to a new non-default user group and you should have the access you had previously. Let me know if otherwise.

Here is the new process (that will likely get tweaked, but...) for when I turn registration back on:

Newly registered members will not have to be approved by an admin, however they will have singular access to a new forum I've labeled as "The Shallows."
[/*:m:ksh49661]
As a newly registered member, your one responsibility is to start a self introduction thread in The Shallows, and post in it a few times.
[/*:m:ksh49661]
Once you have verified that you're here because of what the site is via contributing real content in your introduction, you will be given access to the rest of the content and access to participate.
[/*:m:ksh49661]
By relaxing the initial security a level but limiting it to a single place, spambots and automated viagra pushers will undoubtedly post in The Shallows as well... but they will thus be obvious, and they will be banned and deleted, without further polluting the deeper waters of our streams. I may at some point solicit a select few users to help keep The Shallows clean of obvious spam posters and users.[/*:m:ksh49661]

**One last thing. If you are a user here and you have not made any posts, your remaining time is limited. While I understand that enjoying lurking and not feeling you have much to contribute or don't like to or whatever are all valid, to be a member of this community there is a minimum contribution. Zero posts is NOT it. One lonely post isn't either...

We'll see how this new process works.

Thanks for your continued support!

-Gus

am i special? i'm a new user with 0 (until now) posts and it appears i can still read from and post to the entire forum. just wondering if everything is working properly or if i'm just so awesome the rules don't apply to me. cause i am. and they shouldnt.

also, relevant posts are tough to come by for a newcomer in winter.

You snuck in under the wire. :) I grandfathered all current users, but will be deleting zero post users, so get in there and let us know who you are!

in my first post a few days back i actually stated that i am not a fisherman. :problem: that doesn't mean that i don't want to be one. fishing license is in my wallet and tenkara rod on the way. everybody has to start somewhere. not sure what the problem is.

The old smallstreams site was shut down for about 6 months due to spam.

Yup...I don't think I could handle another 6 months of no Smallstreams!

There are plenty of other places for you to go and get your information.

I am not kidding.

...but none as good or as friendly as Smallstreams :D

NOBODY that was here is on the brink, yet. That said, part of being a member in a community is contributing to that community. I will be sending an email to all zero and single post users in a few days. They will have a chance to contribute. I do this on all communities I run or have run. Everyone has something to contribute.

This is meant to be a quality, personal flyfishing community. As Adam has posted elsewhere, smallstreams is/was arguably the first true flyfishing community. I've created or been a part of many, most of the old ones. Heck, who else here remembers when VFS was (sadly) bought by FFM or when westfly was a tight knit community of less than a hundred people? How about when Clark's was actually Clark Davis'?

When Adam says not fishers, he meant SPAMMERS. They are not interested in fishing, but peddling their viruses, smut and prescription links. He did not mean people who are here because of interest or to learn.

Those spammers can do real harm to the community. The last iteration of smallstreams was shut down for close to a year, actually, because of trying to repair the damage caused by the bots and spam peddlers.

Thus, I will do whatever is necessary to keep this place and its ideals safe, and the community alive and in good health. I will prune as necessary, with prudence, but also without remorse or need of explanation with the good of the site in mind.
