Hi guys -

Here's the first trout I caught from a little Westcountry stream last year, on a spider fished in the surface film... quite a moment which I thought was worth recording:

Satoshi, I love those Japanese trout. Beautiful orange spots!

I don't take many fish pictures because I don't have a digital camera, but here's a couple from this year. They're from a little stream that comes out of an old town reservoir that's now a "backup" reservoir...the dam that makes the reservoir is from the late 1800's and is in rough shape so the town's thinking of taking it down to save money. It'll be interesting to see if they do that and how the river changes if they do.

Both of these fish are from below the dam. I know they're wild fish because I caught my smallest brookie ever in this stretch, and not even the state of Massachusetts would stock a 2 inch brookie.

The black & white pic is mid-flop...that fish just would not stop flopping all over the place from the second I hooked him until I finally got him off the line.

The second pic is from late November, I think. It was a rare warm day so my girlfriend and I went for a hike along the river. Suddenly she screams "Is that a trout?!?!!?!" (she's rather excitable). I couldn't figure out what she was talking about because we were 40 feet away from the river, but there was this little guy in a tiny feeder that's normally a trickle but became big enough to swim up from all the rain we'd had that week. A foot wide and 6 inches deep at most.

I've really started to love this no-name stream...it's 10 minutes from my house, great fishing, I never see anybody else there and it's nice and cool in the hot summer. Only issue is the POISON IVY all over the freaking place.

Trout are pretty.

(It should be noted, I caught the Cutt on the bass popper after getting all my dry flies caught in trees. On a great, challenging little stream that's a 15 mile bike ride from my front door.)

Smallstream Alaska

... and yeah ... the stream rose that might ... and we woke up with water in the tent ... and broke camp ... threw everything in the raft ... floated down to the next gravel bar above water ... waited till morning ... and caught thirty inch rainbow trout passing thru to the salmon spawning that had just started with the rising stream waters ... just as planned ( Not !) ... but life was good anyway.

Sure wish there was open water somewhwere near right now ... -25 F is getting old !

That's my mate Robert in the photo, he managed to pick that vest up for much cheapness just after Loop swapped it for an inferior design. I've had the same one for years, with better shoulders it'd be the perfect vest IMHO.

Thanks guys, glad you like the pics (and the reel :D ). The Danielssons are slowly replacing all my reels for trout and Grayling as and when I can afford them. No drag, just simple and light and - most importantly - uncomplicated. Too many other reels weigh a ton to give you a drag that could stop a Permit... not really what you need on a 3 weight!!

Kurt - cheers ;) That day on the Meon really recharged my batteries and I have very fond memories of that shiny Grayling. I think of them as a freshwater Bonefish!! :bigthumb:

On the reel note, drag is as drag does... I love palming the bottom of a screaming loop... a silent scream when compared to the noise of most reels... I've landed plenty of steelhead on my Traditional 2 and 2W... and the occasional chinook/king (like hooking a submarine...) as well.

Martin - That's one solid trout, and looks like a beautiful little gem flowing in the background.

martin_b
05-14-2010, 01:25 PM
That little stream you can see in the background is an exceptional stream. It holds pretty much only big fish. It hasn't been fished for many years and have in many places been left to itself, which is something you can't say for 80% of all Danish streams(!).

My theory is that since it is a very non-typical stream for this country, it is a stream that consists of nothing but long runs with shallow rocky/gravel bottom and a few deeper pools here and there. It is a stream with low habitat for bigger fish, but the places that can hold them, do. The trout are said to be particular canibalistic, and since there are so many places for the fish to spawn successfully, there's an abundance of little trout every year that the trout can grow huge on. In that sense it is not a very productive stream - in that very few small trout survive because of the big trout feeding on them.

Well, I don't know, fact is that I continue to be amazed by this stream. I, and my friend who has the access to it, have ONLY caught fish larger than 19 inches in it. And my friend fishes it quite often, and he has yet to see any small trout. It is not stocked in any places.

Since this thread is about small stream trout I will post a picture of another fish, caught last year in April:
http://www.holmbangsoe.dk/webimg/fabelfisken/trout.jpg

And I know it's probably controversial to some, but there's also this picture of my friend (with permission) who had to kill this monster from the stream:

I like the way you put those thoughts into words.
An interesting thing about photographs and glare and that is that the picture doesn't tell the whole story.
My minds eye can see ever so clearly the brook trout clearing water as my brain filtered out all else and froze that moment in time.

Kind of like being able to focus on a single conversation in a crowded room of conversations.

Or the other day when reeling a rainbow in a crystal clear pool with sun reaching through water to grab hold of that rainbow and make his mail light up like burnished steel. There was a lot to distract and yet that image is frozen in my mind.
Very pleasant indeed.
Reflections.

Freezing moments in time....

Sometimes, when pressed, I've actually tried to explain my need, to not just fish but to flyfish---in moving water. Most often I fall back on the same metaphor/analogy. When the conditions are right it becomes very easy to slip into a mental state, so focused and aware that as the #20 BWO parachute, drifts through the glare of a sunlit riffle, the near instantaneous rise of a trout seems to last an eternity--freezing a moment in mind.

jmcg

Just like that. Those memories are collected and can be flipped through like turning the pages of a book, in more mundane times.

It is what it is. The scientist use it for identification, I bought mine from a Japanese web site. It gives me a few more seconds to look at the trout, take pictures without handling it. I catch the trout, net or hand and into the box, camera.

It just gives me a few more moments to be able to check the fish and have a uniform background for the identification. It also removes any "well it was about this big" :D

I like it although the images are a bit sterile, for this kind of thing, I don't mind taking away, it actually ads detail by uniformity to the identification.

Normally it is bad form to quote oneself but

I just got a PM from an upset Dave, who had been, in fact fishing barbless
and who did not in fact inflict this damage,
small fish eat every fly they see so it was in fact have been inflicted by a previous angler.
There is a blood mark on the jaw, yet no apparent bleeding from that fish.

I responded in the first place in anger, being the brat that I am.

Dave, rather than respond to your mail, this far better aired here,
as my direct and public apology to you.

I could and indeed should have given you some benefit of doubt rather than the benefit of cold sarcasm, in the light of which I calculate that my response in the thread is out of place.

I stand corrected and wish you all the best for your fishing and conservation for the future

Roy Christie

 Good form on all counts. Roy, your post was not out of line, but Dave took offense. That's ok. Instead of lashing publicly, Dave handled it privately and you apologized publicly.

That is how we do it here at smallstreams.

Seriously. Good form on all counts.

(You boys ok?)

That damage is caused by barbed hooks, some folks catch a wee thing like that and shake it off the hook, that is the usual way, I guess.
The other is using a big hook with a big barb and ripping out that hook then slinging the fish back in without care.

Barbless, no way that can happen.

Keep up the good fishing Dave,

cheers,
Roy

Edit - As you were, folks

Upset might be too strong a word; I'm quite new to fishing, still figuring things out, and want to learn (and make sure I'm not screwing things up too badly).

More than anything, I respect the passion of everyone around here for fishing, and would never fault Roy or anyone else for it. Certainly no hard feelings on my part.

This is one of the most gorgeous brookies I have ever seen caught. The blue halos and emerald green back were amazing. I wish I could have captured it's colors better on camera, they look a lot more dull in the pic.

Typically 'our' browns look identical to those Ive seen in the European articles at small streams .com. Early season , right now we can get a lot of searun fish , such as this one . My friend Nic caught this 3 days ago . Its 4 lbs and really about typical in size and shape .

Ah, the fish in the second last picture has very small spots. I thought at first it may be a fine spotted snake river cutthroat but your location put an end to that. What other species do you fish for?

I don't know built the rod but someone did a nice job, it's a 7 ft glass ferruled Phillipson/3M blank that I picked up online 4-5 yrs ago that is still one of my favorites to fish. Really like it with a DT5. That's the rod that started my minor obsession with later model short Phillipsons.

One time or another I've fished for whatever's around here from sturgeon to northerns to quebec reds but native fish are my favorites, bulltrout, Montana arctic grayling , westslopes and athabasca rainbows. Lately though I've taken another swing at trying to figure out stillwater trout when the streams are blown out.

Come on up, the coffee's always on

I have not been able to ID the little trout. Would anyone letting me know what it is?

I caught it in the central sierra at about 4000 ft on a small stream. I have caught the same type, but larger, on the same water.

It is not a brown or brook. But it does not look much like a rainbow, at least any I have seen.

@centralsierra: brown and rainbow with parr marks.

@martin_b: You should now be able to view the video. In the vid, I am trying to illustrate the simplicity of tenkara. One fly, one cast, one fish. I am about 30% casting non-dominate hand (I usually cast right handed but am now casting about 30% left handed) but the chest mounted camera does not often show that. I have a head mount that I am going to give it a go. I just got the GoPro and Macbook recently and am learning the camera and program to edit the video. It is so easy to do now that I have a fast computer. Now I just take the chip out of the camera and shove it into the laptop, direct transfer, no cable, super quick. The video is my first movie with the system. There will be more, the camera will go with me as I am having more fun fishing now than I have in a very long time.

The way I see it, you will be in quite sharp focus when I use it so you better mind your manners because our peers will be watching.

Gonna be pretty hard to pry my collapsing rod out of my hands but I think with the introduction of a Marutake rod into my quiver, there might be a little change in my repertoire.

"Do you consent to being photographed?" is my new singsong with the GoPro. The HD shows everything.

More later.

By the way, thank you. I enjoyed making the video, it is a fun process.

You remind me of a friend of mine, s.brooks, the article he wrote: http://web.archive.org/web/20000303063548/http://www.smallstreams.com/Reality.html I know it is older than 1999 but that is the year I pulled it out of the wayback machine.

I'm really starting to enjoy dreaming of fishing again and by goodness, I've got a lot on my plate to distract me. I'm no less into several things that could derail my fishing, like fatherhood to start... but I am a fisherman and my skill level has me interested.

Really looking forward to fishing with you Zank, can't wait to backpack in and unroll the bivy and fluff the bag. The tarp is it man, the tarp is it.

Back in December '08 there was an unusually warm day in NJ, for that time year (70F), I was off from work and alone (another unusual occurrence). Decided to enjoy the weather and take a hike in the woods behind the house. Took a rod along for the heck of it figuring a few casts would be fun. Didn't expect to even see any fish let alone catch one as the brookies there were definitely done spawning and had probably moved down into a few deep pools and beaver ponds down in the lower valley. Drawing a conehead muddler back towards me past a large boulder situated near a pool tail I thought...behind that rock would be the PERFECT place to set up for for an ambush, if I was big brookie. Just as the fly passed the point, AMAZINGLY a wake appeared heading strait towards the muddler like a pike zooming in on duckling too close to it's lair. Quite a shock but I was ready...
Both of us played it perfectly AND I got a picture. AMAZING the fish was in such good shape post spawn, Testament to the fertility of the stream. Didn't catch anything else the next few hours, didn't care.

Nice fish! It's small, yet it still looks old. And the colours are beautiful!

They are all very different in color and can grow very very big. Biggest caught in this region was 124 cm, 22 kilo's
The graylings from here are also stunning. Have some nice pictures of them but this topic is for trout I quess and not for grayling if i'm right?

otherwise I can post some later

One of two wild brook trout of the same size caught fifteen minutes apart on a small stream on Minnesota's North Shore of Lake Superior, June 2014. Nice fish for this little stream.

Are they lake run Brookies?

Ernest
07-09-2014, 04:39 AM
No, these are not coasters. They are wild, naturally reproducing small stream brook trout living about 10 river miles and several insurmountable falls above Lake Superior. I fished this stream often as a child, and I am coming back for short visits as an old man. Events have allowed some of the trout to grow larger than expected. There are bigger ones in the stream than the one pictured, but I couldn't catch the real big ones. I'll be going back again.

And there are a few sweet little-uns about.
This one put up quite a fight for his size.
