View Full Version : Outing & Adventure in June - Who's in?

Chef

I just made reservations for two days at Chirstmas Tree lake on June 9th & 10th (Wednesday & Thursday) and will most likely go up on Sunday or Monday to start the festivities of stream walking & still water floating.

If you're interested call in asap to secure your permit as only 20 are allowed on the water at a time.

Maybe you do a day or just hang on to stream walking instead of the still water. I'm not sure where I'll base camp but it may be Hawley (close to beer runs) and most likely won't be there much anyways but it's a good middle point to go in any direction for the day.

It's $30.00 a day per angler and the fish are Browns, Rainbow & Apache trout.

June 9 & 10 (wed/thur) 928-369-7669 for reservations

Reservations required! Like a good restaurant, this lake can be unforgettable. The world record Apache trout was taken here. The lake is limited to 20 anglers per day. Most people describe this lake as being in the middle of nowhere. Travel the 20 or so minutes down a well-worn, and sometimes very rutted, dirt road and you’ll probably agree. Once you arrive, this horseshoe-shaped, 41-acre paradise beckons the fly fisher to explore. Anglers playfully refer to Christmas Tree Lake as an Apache trout hatchery because of the many fish caught in the two- to five-pound range. Types of Fish: Apache, brown, and rainbow trout.

Your trip will be awesome but it is mid-week, time off, arghh.

If I can make it, I will.

this sounds awesome. i am going to try to make it. are there other lakes nearby or streams that we can fish (that won't be in runoff) if we make it a long weekend?
please keep me in the loop as to logistics, camping spots, etc.
thx

Brooks, that sounds fantastic. I hope you make the weekend, that's just that much more of a reason for me to make the drive. Wow, that's like half the team right there boy, that is if Chef makes the weekend.

Weekend.

We can do Brookville or I'll hunt up a hidden stream for us.

Chef, I've been told that where you, hook and I visited the oxbows above, that's alright to hike into. I'm going to verify that somehow but if that is the case, I'll be making a beeline there for a couple of trips this summer.

Hopefully we'll meet up on the weekend but as of now I was thinking like:

 Tuesday run up, set camp, fish all day at surrounding lakes & streams
 Wednesday the Tree
 Thursday the Tree
 Friday XXX Brookville and hiking feeder trickles at remote Lake X or similar
 Saturday strike camp roll back...this day may be able to swing depending on the vibe so if you all are up by the crack you should be able to smell our trail and we can meet on the ridge just past Brookville up on the left (parking) and hike in?

I'm riding up with the Chef at the downtown Sheraton (newly addicted to the fly) and our front office manager (Jeep expert/hiker dude and newly addicted to the fly) - both first time up in country in the Whites.

We don't have set schedules so I like to go when there's less human pressure during the week so I can take like t/w off and pto th,fr, sat. If there's anyone that can take time off during the week let me know for burner trips - Hook is locked down at the new casino build going on at Casino Arizona so his summer may be shot. I reached out to Terry Chia as well to see if there's any interest.

Working on the camp set now, menu, beverages, cigars, rod selection and flies...

I'm STOKED!

Sean, nothing wrong with this my friend - it's the passion, the vibe and feel that makes it all worth while especially giving to others...The Lama would be proud.

Drifts are at 10 feet but Chief tells me there will be feesh. There are some lakes with fish kill after drilled holes let out a stench of death. I am going no matter what, rain or shine with big dries in tow.

Chef, are the roads open now?

You have a 4 wheel drive, I have a city car that can make the trip when the roads are dry, the roads won't be dry but if there is no snow on the roads, maybe I can take M's Rav 4.

There are streams for me to fish if I can get to them without walking 20 miles.

:D

Please ask your contacts (Chief) if the roads are good back to the target. If I can get in, the odds are stacked that I can go...

adam

I was up on the Mogollon Rim last weekend and there is a lot of snow and standing water.

This is a couple of thousand feet lower than the area that the meet is intended.

In the next several weeks, we will have snow melting high temperatures...

Brooks, I will try to get up there to see what is going on.

If we can't meet you guys, looks like S.Brooks and I are going to pack up a valley and overnight on a stream.

Update

Rim Lakes

Black Canyon Lake is accessible by the Rim Road and FS 86 as of April 26. It should be stocked next week.

Chevelon Lake is accessible by the Rim Road and FS 169 (from either Winslow via Hwy 99, Heber via FS 504, or from the Woods Canyon Lake turnoff to the Rim Road) - Chevelon is not on the stocking schedule because we stock fingerlings and subcatchables only, but Chevelon has good winter carryover

Willow Springs Lake is accessible and was stocked this week. It is also on the schedule to be stocked next week also.

Woods Canyon Lake was not accessible as of yesterday, but the Forest was planning to remove the downed trees on the 105 road (road to lake) tomorrow April 30. It should be accessible for this weekend. It will not be stocked until late next week at the earliest.

Bear Canyon Lake is still not accessible. The 300 road is open to the 34 road, but not further than that. It will be a little bit longer for this to open.

Show Low-Pinetop

Fool Hollow, Show Low, Rainbow, Scott, Woodland are all accessible and stocked

Silver Creek has been stocked for a fishing clinic earlier this week. It goes onto the weekly stocking schedule next week as well.

Concho Lake is accessible and stocked

East Sector

Carnero Lake is still not accessible. Tyler checked it yesterday and there are still large snowdrifts preventing access to the lake. Plus the lake has winterkilled (based on very low oxygen levels). We will get it restocked as quickly as we can hatchery trucks to the lake (following our spring survey to confirm a winterkill).

Big Lake should be accessible this weekend via the Williams Valley road (FS 249) from Alpine. Hwy 261 and 273 are still closed. However, Big Lake is still frozen over.

Crescent Lake should be accessible this weekend via the Williams Valley road (FS 249) from Alpine. Hwy 261 and 273 are still closed. Plus, Crescent Lake is still frozen over and has winterkilled (based on very low oxygen levels). We will restock the lake as quickly as we can survey the lake to confirm a winterkill.

Lee Valley Lake is still no accessible. Hwy 273 is still closed at the Forest Boundary near Sunrise, plus the gate is locked from the south at Crescent Lake. Snowdrifts are likely still present between Crescent and Lee Valley. Lee Valley is likely still frozen and has experienced a winterkill (based on low oxygen levels). We will restock the lake as soon as we can get hatchery trucks to the lake (following our spring survey to confirm a winterkill).

Greer Lakes are all accessible and stocked.

Nelson Reservoir is accessible but not stocked yet. We need to wait until it stops spilling until we stock it.

Hulsey Lake is accessible but not stocked yet. We need to wait until the hillside dries out so the stocking truck does not get stuck or tear up the hillside in muddy conditions.

Luna Lake is accessible. Luna is not on the stocking schedule because we stock fingerling and subcatchables only. Luna does have winter carryover.

Ackre Lake is still inaccessible.

Streams

LCR Greer is accessible but will not be stocked until the week of May 10-14. The schedule shows that it will be stocked in the first week of May, however, all streams are flowing high right now and we are delaying the stocking due to the flows.

Sheeps Crossing is not accessible, and will not be stocked on the first week of May.

East Fork Black River is accessible from FS 26 (Beaverhead) or by the Williams Valley Road (FS 249 and FS 24). But the river is running high and will not be stocked on schedule. It will be stocked no sooner than the week of May 10-14.

West Fork Black River is accessible (see East Fork Black River and add FS 25).

From the West it is not looking good for a couple of weeks from your report.

Looks like access is from the East but as you get into the high country, you will have limited access.

Thanks for the report Chef.

Nice.

Christmas Tree Lake permits are sold out.

Temps for the area can be found by utilizing McNary, Greer and Springerville weather web sites. Sunrise Ski Area has an operating web camera that will show you what to expect in the snow department.

I m not sure what roads are still closed...

Brooks is looking for plan B lake on Friday. Some lakes have experienced winterkill due to low oxygen levels.

I will drive up beacoup early Sat a.m. Backpack overnight up a stream that night with Brooks fish a.m. and bail mid day.

Looks like we can slap five as we pass each other on the road to somewhere.

Ok then, we will be in the hood on Saturday a.m. There is good feeshin down below where you and Dan did the walk. It's a short tromp through a tight valley, then it opens up hidden style... cool- both sides are killa - the lower does open up a few times, goes through a rock quarry (sp) and has some cool steps in between. Upper is awesome too. Note: All main roads are now clear of snow and open, including Highways 273 and 261. Nearly all lakes are accessible and full. Boat ramps are accessible at all lakes, however, use caution while launching at Concho Lake. For more information, call the Pinetop Office of the Arizona Game and Fish Department at (928) 367-4281.

S.Brooks, there you go, we are on.

I will be meeting you either Friday night, June 11 or Saturday morning at 8a or so, Winn Campground. I will know more closer to the date, when I will drive up.

Chef, we are hiking up to the headwaters in the Forest or on the Reservation, don't know, need to do a little homework. We may hit the oxbows early Sat and then hike/camp up there or go back. I'm inclined for Sal-F and numbers of them. Maybe hike to from our truck and stealth camp in never never land. Yeah, that sounds more like it. Up where the Dodgers play, tu sabe? If we are up the valley, I will hang a little pirate flag in a spot that you can see, we will know when we see you, at least you will know if we are there...

Brooks, get ready, bring your favorite things for the hike and let's pen a story together for this one eh?

I enjoy writing, I don't care if I am good at it or not, I enjoy writing and taking pictures to capture memories. S.Brooks and I are old friends, he is a founding member of this web site and for me to be able to plan a trip with him in the same sacred waters as we walked upon before is OUTSTANDING!

I can't wait to hang the pirate flag to let Chef know we are up that valley. I'll hang it in a place only he will capture in a glance, not a place where goony goo goo will see it and steal it.

B- The Tree has taken ill this year and no stocking has occurred wilst letting the Apache's out of the gates to the streams. A virus at the hatchery prevented the Tree from being stocked this year. Most people complained and they cancelled fish camp this year because they want it ez like but for me I'm going to find feeesh, many feeesh and the bigguns to boot.

In reality I don't care about the feesh I care about the journey so I'm off today to pick a fews things up for the trip up on Tuesday and will bring my mannequin heads for markers.

Wanderin' through the tall grass and in for a Dip
Maybe some guac, machaca and even a Chip
Hold on I'm coming so be tight on the Grip
Cowboy coffee slammin' and blastin' a Rip
Slidin' down stream banks ready to Slip
Got my new trick Flip restin' on my Hip
Slung back rod flex just on the Tip
Flingin' flies with a Chef like Whip
Spirits in tow ready to Nip
Maybe a chug or just a Sip
You'll hear the feel straight from my Lip....s

I'm just happy to be going in country

If you target southern CO.....northern NM. I might be able put in an appearance if I wouldn't be imposing. I'll be fishing in the area the last week of July and the first week of August. I'll be a experiencing a number of back country streams in the area during that time. Right now, I have roughly two overnights on two different wilderness streams planned. (Both in CO) in addition to the drive-to streams. In both cases I'd planned on making the trips alone but I'm hoping a buddy from town can make it out for at least one of the trips.

That section sure looks like a section where I caught a couple of Rio's last year.....

I'll be off from July 9th-21st and could do something after the 16th-21st. Right now I'm organizing another run during that time - the first part will be up in Sedona with the blood.

Thanks and I appreciate your chiming in with that comment.

The next time I visit that valley, it will be alone, like I wrote in "living outside"

Great stuff guys!
Can't believe I missed this thread.
Last time I vacationed in AZ was 2001, man I miss it out there. Looks like a 2011 trip is in the works.

I would be happy to do the next meet or maybe Chef will do it again, who knows, it always seems to happen each summer.

Talked to the wife about an AZ trip in 2011. Looks possible. Because of our work schedules we travel end of Sept- beginning of Oct. Hopefully I'll run into some the AZ smallstreams.com crew while we are out there. Wifey wants to stop at Chef's restaurant for sure. This year we're going to see my mom & brothers in Tenn. Spending a few days in the Smokys on the way back. Should have a good report from there. What's a vacation without a little fly fishing or a lot. ;-)

I have family in NW Tennessee and grew up there during the summers.

I love Tennessee.

Kai is a great spot.

Let's get a AZ meet going, this year, next year, both, I can put somethings together, make suggestions, backpacking or HUGE TARP TENT way up a mountain valley.

What ever you want...
